Behind the Adventure

From the Himalayas to Dalarna

With over 20 years of experience as an expedition leader in Nepal, Lama has brought world-class expertise to the rivers of Sweden. Every trip we run is shaped by the humility and precision required on some of the world’s greatest rivers.

Dala River Adventure was founded with a vision to combine international safety standards with the uniquely calm yet powerful nature found only here in Dalarna.

Training

Lama’s Kayak School & Guide Training

At our kayak school, you’ll learn whitewater kayaking in small, gentle rapids set in beautiful natural surroundings, with a strong focus on safety and confidence. You’ll learn fundamental paddling techniques, how to enter and exit the kayak, how to swim safely in rapids, perform an Eskimo roll, and cross currents.

We also practice a wide range of safety exercises. Step by step, you’ll progress to slightly larger rapids, with the final day ending in a Class II–III+ run. All necessary paddling equipment is provided.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any previous experience?

No, no previous experience is required. Our guides are highly certified, including experience from the Himalayas, and adapt each trip to the group’s level. We provide a thorough safety briefing before entering the water.

What equipment do I need to bring?

We provide all technical and safety equipment: wetsuit, helmet, life jacket, and paddle. The only things you need to bring are swimwear to wear under the wetsuit, a towel, and possibly a wool or synthetic base layer on colder days. Avoid cotton.

What happens if it rains?

Absolutely, the trip still goes ahead. You will get wet regardless, and whitewater activities are actually one of the best outdoor experiences you can have on a rainy day. We only cancel trips in extreme weather conditions, such as thunderstorms, that directly affect safety.

Who can participate? Are there any age or physical requirements?

You must be able to swim and be in normal physical condition to participate. The general minimum age for our classic rafting trips in Fänforsen is 12, depending on water levels. Riverboarding and Ducky may have a slightly higher recommended age. Feel free to contact us if you are unsure.

How long does the activity take?

Plan to spend around 3 to 4 hours with us in total, from arrival to changing. The time on the water itself is usually around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on water flow. The rest of the time is used for welcome, equipment fitting, detailed safety briefing, and some transportation.

Do we need to arrange our own transportation?

You will travel by your own car (or public transport) to our starting point at Käringforsen, Björbo. After that, we will handle all necessary logistics transportation to and from the water during the activity. If you are a larger group, we can sometimes help arrange a bus booking.
